Female Sexual Arousal Disorder is all the buzz in the news – again!    I thought we were all done with the elusive search for the cure-all of women's arousal problems. But it is Boehring, a German pharmaceutical company, who has refreshed the discussion with their search for the next cash-cow -- a Viagra for women, called Flibanserin. I thought we had all agreed, after 10 years of pouring millions into solving Female Sexual Arousal, that it is just too complex a problem for one little pill to solve!  Feeling aroused comes from the brain AND the body. Viagra worked for men, because erections wane with age and Viagra helped the body with the blood-flow for those erections -- not with the arousal).

This time, Boehring went for the brain. Flibanserin is a failed anti-depressant, which acts on neurotransmitters in the brain, which, theoretically is where 'arousal' starts. While the drug didn't do squat for depression, a preliminary study of 1000 women found that it did seem to contribute to how satisfying a sexual experience it provided for a small, but significant, amount of the women who took the drug.

When it came to 'sexual desire', however, the results were disappointing. Still, Boehring decided to give it the good ol' college-try and push the drug through by marketing it for Sexual Desire Disorder" (whatever that is supposed to be nowadays).

Sexologists sat on the sidelines with the pharmaceutical companies while waiting for the FDA's ruling on this drug this Friday. What was their own ruling? No big surprise there, "Female arousal is just too complicated"

On Friday, the FDA unanimously ruled against Flibanserin, saying that the drug’s impact was “not robust enough to justify the risks,” which include dizziness, nausea and fatigue -- particularly with long-term daily use.
 
Female sexual arousal?  It isn't so much a mystery as it is just complex.  After all, it involves not only brain-chemistry and  physical health, but also a lack of stress, or distraction.
 
This pill does not seem to do anything meaninful.  A good porn clip could do much more to get a woman past her distractions and focus on her arousal.
